I became a Christian during my freshman year of college through the ministry of Campus Outreach (CO). At the time, I was attending a Christian university, but did not have a true understanding of the Gospel. I grew up in the church and knew all of the right answers, but Jesus was nothing more than a good luck charm to me. My best friend from high school, who wasn’t a Christian, came to know Christ at the University of Southern Indiana (USI) through the ministry of CO. We talked regularly, and he began to tell me about how God had saved him, and how he has found true joy in Christ. Through our conversations, he could tell that I was not living a life that showed any evidence of salvation. He invited me to come visit him at USI, and I accepted. While visiting, I attended one of CO’s weekly outreach events. As the speaker talked about our brokenness, and the penalty we deserve, I began to understand the weight and severity of my sin. Then he explained God’s plan of redemption for those who would believe. I vividly remember the relief and hope that came over me. I wrestled with this for several weeks, and it had become clear to me that I was not a Christian. I began searching the Bible, trying to find any possible way to become a Christian without giving up my own idols (and failing miserably, praise God). Finally, through the power of the Holy Spirit, my resistance to surrender was defeated. For the first time in my life, I confessed my sin to the Lord, professed faith in Jesus Christ, and asked Him to save me.
